The theme of the October 3 festivities in 2023 is Water and Fire. The battle for the freedom of Leiden is celebrated and commemorated. That battle is symbolized by water and fire, the forces of nature that do good and evil and are each other's opposites.
Route The starting point of the parade is the Zoeterwoudsesingel near the Lorentzhof at number 39-40. Then you walk clockwise to the intersection with the Lammenschansweg and from there over Witte Singel, Noordeinde, Breestraat, Korevaarstraat and Levendaal where the mayor and the 3 October board will take part in the parade at the Plantagelaan, near the Utrechtsebrug.
General instructions To ensure that the Grand Parade runs continuously through the city without gaps, all participants and the public are asked to allow the procession to pass without delay. It is not permitted to provide participants with smoking equipment, drinks or food. For historical reasons, an exception is made at Sociëteit Minerva. Here the mayor, the chairman of the 3 October Association and the Praeses Collegii of L.S.V. Minerva makes a toast to the celebration and the Io Vivat is played.

Parking ban It is not permitted to take up a stand along the route with a vehicle. If necessary, vehicles are removed by order of the police. People are urgently requested to leave the route as wide as possible and not to walk with the Grand Procession or to be crossed by the procession. Especially in the narrower passages, activities and shops outside the facades are not permitted. Commercial activities in the parade are prohibited in any case.
Children Of course, every parade fan will let small children stand at the front. But make sure they don't interfere with floats, riders, carriages and orchestras. So do not allow (grand)children to stand or sit on the street and ensure that they stay behind the crowd barriers. Participating orchestras are: Show & Marching Band AMIGO, Band of Liberation (BOL), Franciscus Band Leiden (FBL), Chr. Music association Kunst & Genoegen juniors and seniors (K&G), Tamarco Leiderdorp.
